Day 1: Part 1 - The Letter

Dear Students of Mount Olympus School,

We are currently in need of a new school Mascot.  We are giving you a choice between 15 gods, goddesses, and heroes.

Please submit your proposal to Mr. Taylor by September 17, 2020.  Your proposal should be convincing as to why that particular Greek character should represent our school as a mascot.  Make your points clear so we can make our decision wisely.  Thanks!

-Mount Olympus School Staff

Day 1: Part 2 - The Research

Now is time to do a little research on these Greek heroes.  Use the following links to see why each one should - or should not be - the school mascot.  Using the Google Doc provided, take any notes that will help you write your paper.
**Not every hero is on every website, so you may need to click a few links to find one with the hero you've chosen.**
  • Greek Myths 4 Kids
  • Ducksters
  • Greek Gods
  • InfoPlease
  • MythWeb
  • Ancient Greece
  • Meet the Greek Gods
Now that you know what to do, go to Google Classroom to begin your assignment.

Day 2: Part 1 - Trading Card

Now that you have done your pre-writing, it is time to create a trading card of your god/goddess.   Before you do anything else, right click on the picture below of the god/goddess that you chose and save it on your Chromebook.

Once you have saved the photo, click THIS LINK and follow the directions.

Day 2: Part 2 - Rough Draft

Introduction: Start with an anecdote (short story), question, quote, or interesting statement. Introduce your claim and reasons that will be discussed in your body paragraphs.
Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph - a total of five - should highlight a reason that supports your claim mentioned in your introduction, as well as provide a piece of evidence that supports that reason. Don’t forget to use transitions!
Conclusion: Wrap up your statements and thoughts here. Challenge the reader, ask a thought-provoking question, or restate your ideas in a new way.
Now that you know what to do, go to Google Classroom to continue your assignment.

Day 3: Part 1 - Self Edit

You are now ready to edit your paper.  Using the self edit sheet, check your own paper for the following things:
  • Introduction
  • Supporting Details
  • Overused Words
  • Voice
  • Focus
  • Transitions
  • Conclusion
Be honest with yourself.  Don't just check it off so you can be done.  I will be doing my own edit later and will be a little less harsh in my edit if I can see that you found your own faults.

Day 3: Part 2 - Peer Edit

Now that you have finished checking your own paper, give it to another student for a peer edit.  They are looking for the same things:
  • Introduction
  • Supporting Details
  • Overused Words
  • Voice
  • Focus
  • Transitions
  • Conclusion
Be fair while editing someone's paper, but do not just pass them.  It will not help them out in the long run.

Day 3: Part 3 - Teacher Edit

Now that you have the self and peer edits done, turn the paper in to the writing basket.  Now I will have a chance to edit your paper.  I will be looking for the same things listed above, but also be looking for grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Now that you know what to do, go to Google Classroom to continue your assignment.

Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.

~ Babe Ruth
